My concept was kintsugi and the wording I started with was “By His stripes we are healed.” Many times I write a scripture on the canvas before I start painting. While painting I meditate and worship on that same scripture.

This painting had an interesting journey. When I started it, my concept was the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery called kintsugi. The broken pottery is repaired with gold, which makes it even more beautiful and valuable than the original. As we go through life and give God our pain and broken pieces, He mends us and makes us more beautiful. I started with the wording on this canvas: “By His stripes, we are healed.” As I worked on it, flowers began to appear on the canvas in front of me, and I went with where I was being led. One of my core beliefs is that our brokenness can be replaced with a beautiful garden. None of us get through life without pain and sorrow, but what we do with it matters. Do we press into God? Do we seek His face and comfort? Do we allow Him to take our mess and make it something beautiful? I choose yes. I decide to press in, and then I choose to help others and be a blessing from that pain. My art, in some small way, is meant to bring joy and healing.
