An artist whose work I have admired for decades is Georgia O’Keeffe She was part of the Modernist movement and is one of the most celebrated female artists of her time. When I was in college in Lubbock, the art department took a trip to New Mexico and toured some artist studios. There is something about the Southwest that feeds the soul of an artist. I understand her love for the Southwest where she chose to spend most of her life. The colors, the dry climate, and the temperature of the light there is so appealing. It made a significant impression on me. Many of you may know her work by the sensual flowers and the landscapes she painted. She was a unique person who didn’t try to fit in with the artist community of her day. I admire her courage to be different and to be her own woman. White Hibiscus is one of my paintings that was inspired by her work. The original is 3’x4′ and is a 2” gallery wrap.When you see the flower up close you can see so many colors in the “white” petals. I prints of this one to my Utica Square show and it was a crowd favorite with its bold coloring.
